Alexa! Queue Monster Mash and Thriller! Spooky season is upon us and everyone is looking for a way to get into the spirit. Whether you’re making the trek to Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando or visiting Newberry Pumpkin Patch, there are endless options to get in your Halloween fix before the end of the month.

With midterms coming to a close, you may be catching up on some neglected work and not have enough time to hit the haunted houses. Lucky for you, I have scoped out the top five scary books you can get lost in when you need a little study break.

Coming in at number one is The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. If you’re looking for a classic haunted house story, this is the book for you. Read about the four strangers and the story that took place in the notoriously haunted Hill House. And then once you’re done with the book, you can move on to the Netflix show and trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Next up, The Woman in Black by James Watkins. Depending on your mood, you can read the book or watch the movie. However, I am slightly biased toward the book. This story tells the story of the ghost of a woman who is terrorizing a town mercilessly. Check out the 2012 version of the movie if you’re a Daniel Radcliffe fan!

At number three we have Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Now stay with me on this one. Without a doubt you have heard countless retellings of the infamous science experiment gone wrong… but have you ever read its original origin story? If you’re in the mood for a true classic, this book is for you!

For a spooky but not so scary read, check out The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. It’s full of creepy short stories that won’t make you feel like you need to sleep with one eye open.

Last but not least, The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson is the perfect read for all of those who have a fascination with historical fiction. The best description of this book is Salem Witch Trials meets Gone With the Wind.

If you give any of these a read, feel free to let me know!

Happy Spooky Szn!
